Dollar Tree DIY Skeleton Hand Candle Holder – Easy Halloween Wall Decor
Looking for an inexpensive Halloween DIY that doesn’t look cheap? This skeleton hand candle holder is such a fun way to turn a few Dollar Tree finds into spooky Halloween wall decor!
I wanted something that looked a little more aged and creepy rather than the typical plastic Halloween decorations. With a little paint, a decorative frame, and some skeleton hands, you can make a unique candle holder that looks like something you’d find in a Halloween boutique.
The best part? You don’t need a ton of supplies or any special crafting skills!
Supplies You’ll Need
- Plastic skeleton hands (Dollar Tree)
- Decorative picture frame or wall plaque
- LED pillar candle
- Black and brown acrylic craft paint
- Paintbrushes and a small detail brush
- Paper towels
- Sandpaper or sanding sponge
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Small cutting tool or scissors suitable for plastic
- Faux spiderwebs
- Plastic spider
- Red paint or faux blood for the candle
- Picture hanging hardware
How to Make a DIY Skeleton Hand Candle Holder
Step 1: Prepare the Skeleton Hands
Trim or adjust the plastic skeleton hands as needed so they can hold the candle securely.
Step 2: Age the Skeleton Hands
Brush black or brown paint into the cracks and joints. Wipe away the excess with a paper towel to create an aged bone look.
Step 3: Distress the Frame
Lightly sand the frame if needed. Apply black or brown paint, then wipe or dry-brush the raised areas to give it an antique finish.

Step 4: Attach the Hands
Position the skeleton hands at the bottom of the frame and secure them with hot glue. Make sure they’re sturdy enough to support the candle.
Step 5: Decorate the Candle
Add red paint drips around the top of a battery-operated LED candle to create a dripping blood effect. Let dry completely.
Step 6: Add Spiderwebs
Stretch faux spiderwebs around the frame and hands. Add a plastic spider for an extra spooky touch.
Step 7: Hang and Enjoy!
Attach sturdy hanging hardware, place your LED candle in the hands, and display your new Halloween decoration!
Safety Tip: Only use a battery-operated LED candle, never a real flame.

Tips for Making It Look More Expensive
One of my favorite things about Dollar Tree DIY projects is seeing how different something can look with just a little paint.
Here are a few ways to make this project look even better:
- Stick with muted colors. Black, brown, antique gold, and aged bone tones give it a more vintage Halloween look.
- Don’t skip the paint details. Darkening the creases in the skeleton hands makes a huge difference.
- Use a decorative frame. The more texture and detail the frame has, the better the distressed finish will look.
- Keep the spiderwebs minimal. Just enough to make it spooky without hiding all your hard work.
- Use a warm LED candle. It gives the decoration a creepy glow without the fire hazard.
