DIY Laundry Detergent With Pros & Cons

There are a lot of benefits to making your own laundry detergent but there are also some negatives. See all of those below.

Ingredients

  • 6 bars – Fels Naptha Laundry Bar
  • 2 Boxes – Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 2 Boxes Borax
  • Cheese Grater
  1. Start by grading all of the Fels Naptha laundry bars into a bucket using your cheese grater
  2. Add in your Arm & Hammer and Borax
  3. Mix well

PROS

  1. No toxins or harsh chemicals
  2. Better for the environment, less plastic waste
  3. Safe for your pets and children
  4. It’s easy to make
  5. Cheaper than buying it

CONS

  1. Less convenient because it needs more work to prep.
  2. You may notice that your clothes are not as soft because homemade detergent doesn’t include the chemicals that soften clothes
  3. May not get out the really tough stains
  4. Borax does contain small levels of toxicity
  5. doesn’t smell as good as store-bought detergent
  6. Possibly bad for your wash machine. Fels-Naptha combined with hard water can produce soap scum which can clog up your washing machine and make it smell.
